Psalm 63:1

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;

Psalm 41:1-2

As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.

My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

Passion is a deep, unwavering hunger and pursuit of God. A heart that beats for Him, craves His presence, and desires to please Him above all else.

It is loving the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength (Mark 12:30). It is what makes you chase Him when everything else says stop. Passion is what fuels consistency even when feelings and emotions fail, and passion is one of the pointers, showing our love for God.

Have you ever found yourself going through certain “not so good” moments spiritually?
Praying because you should, reading the Word because it’s your routine, and attending services but feeling disconnected?
You’re not alone. Many believers face this phase at some point or another. And often, what’s missing is passion: that holy fire, once burning bright for the presence, purpose, and person of God.

Why Passion for God Is Important

Passion is not something only meant for some spiritual people, or men of God, as we do call them; it is essential for every believer. Without passion, our walk with God is reduced to mere duty rather than delight, survival instead of heartfelt surrender. God did not save us for stale religion; He saved us for relationship. Passion is what sustains our prayer life, keeps our hearts open in worship, and moves us in total obedience.
When our passion for God is alive, everything else aligns: our decisions, our desires, and our direction.

Recognizing the change when passion starts to fade out.

We may not always notice when passion slips away, but its signs are clear; some of them are as follows:

  • Prayer and the study of God’s word become a mere routine.
  • We feel more drawn to the world than to God, and this is evident in our conversations and, most assuredly, our pursuits.
  • Obedience is replaced with compromise.
  • Distraction replaces or clouds our hunger.

Please note that these are not signs of failure; rather, they’re invitations to return and be reignited. And rather than wallowing in self pity of what once was, our disposition at these times should be one where we return to the Father to be refreshed.

Some common passion killers!

Several enemies wage war against our fire.

  • Sin: Nothing quenches the flame faster than hidden compromise; run away from it.
  • Distractions and Complacency: The cares of life can choke out our desire for the eternal, and comfort can at times cause us to stop growing.
  • Burnout: Intimacy is what fuels our acts of service; our walk with God is what drives our work for God.
  • Comparison: Looking at others can rob us of the joy that comes from personal pursuit.

One of the first steps in guarding the flame of our passion is to recognize some of the things that tend to quench this flame and stay away from them by the help of the Holyspirit.

Rekindling the Fire

So, how do we come alive again? How do we rekindle that passion for God?? How do we reignite what now feels dim???

  1. Return to the secret place

Get back to spending time alone with God: no rush, no haste and no pressure. Just seek Him and Him alone.

  1. Feed on the word.

Worship, meditate on Scriptures, fast, and cut out every spiritual noise that distracts you in one way or another. Joshua 1:8

  1. Surround yourself with people of like minds (people who are passionate for God).

Walk with people who stir your passion for God, and not people who suppress it.

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit for help

Only God can set you ablaze. Ask Him. He delights in lighting yielded hearts

Passion That Endures

Unlike emotional highs that come and go, true passion for God is consistent and can be cultivated. It’s something we must guard daily.
Fan the flame. Protect it from what dims and seeks to snuff it out.
Keep the fire burning through worship, communion, obedience, and love.

Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.”  Romans 12:11

The invitation is open: Come back to the fire.

Let God ignite you again. Let your heart burn like the disciples on the road to Emmaus, who said, “Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked with us?” (Luke 24:32)

This is not about perfection. It’s about pursuit.
About choosing Jesus over and over again and allowing His love consume you.

Say yes to being Fervent.

Say yes to Passion.

Say yes to Him.
