📖 “Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”
— 1 Timothy 4:13 (KJV)

In a world chasing noise, with various voices clamoring and contending for the hearts of men (1 Cor 14:7, 2 Tim 3:1-5, Eph. 4:14), God is still calling His people to give attention and attendance to His voice. (John 10:4-5, 27).

A simple instruction stands out in Paul’s letter to Timothy: “Give attendance.”
It is a call to devotion, focus, and faithfulness. Apostle Paul was not merely telling Timothy to read; he was reminding him to remain steadfast in the practices that sustain spiritual life: reading, exhortation, and doctrine.

Timothy was told to give attendance; we are told the same. The call hasn’t changed.

1. Give Attendance to Reading

Our growth as believers begins with a heart anchored in the Word.
In this noisy world, reading God’s Word trains our hearts to listen to the promptings of God. It’s one of the ways we can set our affections on things above, Col 3:2.

To “give attendance” to reading means to make Scripture our daily focus; to approach it not casually, but consistently. The Apostle Paul didn’t say, ‘Read when you can.’ He said, “Give attendance to it; make it your priority.”

We cannot grow in a God we do not know, and we cannot know Him apart from His Word. (John 17:3)

2. Give Attendance to Exhortation

Exhortation is much more than encouragement; it is the ministry of stirring up faith in others. It is speaking words that align hearts with God’s will. When we give attendance to exhortation, we become channels of edification, vessels through which God can lift weary hands, strengthen the weak, and remind His children of truth when it seems as though their hearts forget.

In the fellowship of believers, words inspired by Scripture become streams of life, giving life to whomever they come in contact with and hope to weary hearts. (Ezekiel 47:9)

3. Give Attendance to Doctrine

Doctrine is what grounds us. It guards us from drifting into error or emotional religion, which has its destination far from where the truth is designed to take us. The early church grew strong because they “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine.” (Acts 2:42). This was a non-negotiable, and is also of importance to us in this day and time.

To give attendance to doctrine is to pay careful attention to what we believe, to weigh it against God’s Word (Prov. 20:22-22, Acts 17:11), whilst we remain humble and teachable before God. It is a commitment to truth, even when truth is inconvenient. (Titus 1:9)

A Call to the Church Today

Apostle Paul’s instruction to Timothy is a timely reminder to every believer, leader, and community of faith.
We are called to return to the fundamental principles of the reading of the Word, the ministry of encouragement, and sound doctrine. These are the pillars that preserve the flame of faith and keep us steadfast in a generation that drifts easily.

At God Chasers Christian Resources Center, we echo this same call:
To give attendance; to be diligent readers, faithful encouragers, and grounded students of the truth.

Reflection
  • What place does the reading of God’s Word hold in your daily rhythm?
  • Are your words stirring faith in others?
  • Are you rooted in sound teaching or carried about by popular trends?

May we, like Timothy, give attendance, not as a duty, but as a devotion born out of love for Christ and His truth.

Let the Word dwell in you richly, and let your life be a living testimony of one who has given attention and attendance to the things that truly matter.
— Colossians 3:16.
